ABSTRACT:

Novel FG-GPLRCs are multilayer functionally graded materials reinforced with graphene nanoplatelets (GPLs) that are non-uniformly distributed in matrix according to a layer-wise variation. Such nanocomposite materials offer unique advantages with significantly improved mechanical properties by making the best use of the extraordinary properties of graphene reinforcements and the beneficial attributes of functionally graded materials to simultaneously meet different structural performance requirements, making it ideal candidate for the development of new generation composite structures. Since first proposed in 2017, FG-GPLRC has become a fast growing emerging area of extensive research efforts worldwide. This talk presents the latest developments in this area, with a particular focus on (1) the fabrication of FG-GPLRC and its stress-strain relationship; (2) atomistic study on its temperature-dependent mechanical properties and pull-out test with the effects of vacancy defects and hydrogen functionalization; (3) linear and nonlinear dynamic behaviours of FG-GPLRC structures; (4) key technical issues and major challenges for future research on FG-GPLRC.
